this monument in deventer (the netherlands) was built in 1830 and was renovated in 2009 to become a luxurious building with offices and shops. studio farris was asked to interpret the character of the facade and to conceive the new functions.
the boreelkazerne (= military barracks of the 'boreel') tells the story of its history. due to its strict appearance and windows filled with bricks, the complex stands out. the realization of a new square at the former back of the building, makes as new entrance to the building. studio farris kept the historical and architectural value of the back facade en chose to emphasize the new entrances through big glazen volumes. on the outside they cut through old scars of the old facade. the former entrance was re-interpreted into a modern entrance, realized by pivoting doors in brass.
